ALEX DAVID RODRIGUEZ
ABOUT ME
I was born and raised in Miami, Florida. I originally planned on studying Computer Science and began my studies at Florida Polytechnic University (FPU) in Lakeland, Florida. However, after my first semester, I found a passion for mathematics that I had not previously realized. I had started tutoring my friends and working with professors to learn more about the fascinating subject. After my freshman year, I transferred to Florida International University (FIU) to study mathematical sciences. About 2 years later, I would graduate Summa Cum Laude and be inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honors society.

Apart from Mathematics, I love technology. So much so that in highschool I was sponsored by Advanced Micro Devices to build custom computers. I also find joy in Soccer, where at FPU I was the intermural team captain.
PRESENTATIONS AND TALKS
(FUTURE) JMM 2022
Presenting "Nonlinear Schrödinger equation with combined nonlinearities in 1D" at the AMS Contributed Paper Session on Partial Differential Equations
AMSÂ 2021 FALL SOUTHEASTERN SECTIONAL MEETING
Presented "Solutions to the 1D focusing stochastic NLS equation with spatially correlated noise" at the Special Session: "Calculus of Variation, Nonlinear Waves and their Numerical Realizations".

PAST PROJECTS AND EXPERIENCE
MATH REU @ FIU
January - June, 2020
Research on the Non-linear Schrödinger Equation (NLS) under the mentorship of Dr. Svetlana Roudenko, Dr. Kai Yang, and Dr. Annie Millet.
My main role was working on numerical analysis of the NLS using MATLAB with Dr. Yang.
BIO-PHYSICS LAB EXPERIENCE
January 2019Â - March 2020
Intra-semester lab experience in Dr. Jin He's Biophysics lab. My main projects were Data and Image analysis, Incubator design and implementation (overlapping with STROBE REU), Cardiomyocyte BPM analysis, and Electromagnetic stimulation.

The Cardiomyocyte BPM analysis was done in MATLAB and involved using the Fourier transform and various interpolation techniques.
I was also involved in the design and prototyping of an electromagnetic stimulation system for cardiomyocites, using.
MATH REU @ FIU
March  - August, 2019
Summer REU under the guidance of Dr. Roudenko which involved the study of the Discrete Fourier transform, Wavelets, and Partial Differential Equations.

The study on Wavelets and Fourier transforms were done in an informal lecture style in conjunction with MATLAB-based assignments.

The study on Partial Differential Equations was supervised by Dr. Roudenko and the visiting PhD student Luccas Campos. The textbook used was by Walter Strauss.
STROBE REU
March - August 2019
Summer REU in Dr. Jin He's Biophysics lab at FIU. Research and work involved Data and Image analysis of Human Embryonic Kidney cells and Cardiomyocytes. The analysis involved using MATLAB and other software to isolate cell areas and use mathematical algorithms to de-noise images.
I was also heavily involved in the development of a miniature incubator that could fit under a microscope which would allow imaging of live cells.

At the end of the REU I gave a presentation on the results of the image analysis and incubator project.
TEACHING
(TA) - Graduate Teaching Assistant
(LA) - Undergraduate Learning Assistant
CALCULUS (TA\LA)
2020
ADVANCED CALCULUS (REAL ANALYSIS 1)Â (TA)
August - December, 2021
DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS (LA)
August - December, 2019
MENTORSHIP
AMRPU@FIU GRADUATE MENTOR
June 1 - July 27 2021
As a graduate mentor for the applied mathematics research program for undergraduates at FIU, I gave lectures, supervised, and guided a research project. The particular project was finding local well-posedness and global existence of solutions to the non-linear Schrödinger equation with combined nonlinear terms.
DIRECTED READING PROGRAM MENTOR
August - December 2020
Mentorship of two students, one in PDE's using the Strauss Textbook, the other in biomathematics.
BIO-PHYSICS UNDERGRAD MENTOR
January - June 2020
As a senior undergraduate I was tasked with mentoring an undergrad to take my place in the lab once I graduated. This involved teaching them MATLAB and Java. I was also tasked with teaching the student the methods used for the image and data analysis.
